How to Open and Convert AI (Adobe Illustrator) Files

aiillustratorvectorconversion

.ai files are Adobe Illustrator’s native format — used by designers for logos, illustrations, branding assets. To use them in non-Illustrator workflows, you need to convert. Several free tools handle this.

What .ai files contain

Adobe Illustrator files store:

  • Vector graphics: shapes defined by mathematical paths (scale infinitely without quality loss)
  • Layers: organizational structure
  • Effects: drop shadows, gradients, blurs
  • Text: editable typography
  • Embedded raster images: photos inside the vector file
  • Color profiles: precise color management

AI is similar to PDF internally — in fact, Illustrator can save AI files in a PDF-compatible mode that many tools can open as PDFs.

Method 1: Photopea (free, browser-based)

The fastest free path:

  1. Visit photopea.com
  2. File → Open → select your .ai
  3. Photopea opens it (preserves layers, vectors, effects)
  4. File → Export As → PNG / JPG / SVG / PDF
  5. Configure quality
  6. Save

Photopea handles most AI files cleanly. Some advanced effects may render slightly differently than in Illustrator.

Method 2: Adobe Illustrator (paid)

If you have access:

  1. Open the AI file
  2. File → Export → Export As
  3. Choose format: PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF
  4. Configure options
  5. Save

Best fidelity since it’s the native app.

Method 3: Inkscape (free, desktop)

Inkscape is the open-source Illustrator alternative:

  1. Install Inkscape
  2. Open .ai file directly (it parses as PDF)
  3. File → Export → choose format
  4. Save

Inkscape doesn’t preserve every AI-specific feature but handles most files well.

Method 4: Open as PDF

Many AI files are saved with “PDF compatibility” enabled:

  1. Rename .ai to .pdf (or just open it with a PDF reader)
  2. PDF reader displays it
  3. Convert PDF to your target format using our PDF to Images tool

Works for most AI files. Won’t preserve editability but visualizes correctly.

Method 5: Affinity Designer (paid)

$70 one-time. Opens AI files cleanly, exports to many formats. Good Illustrator alternative without subscription.

Choosing output format

Convert AI to SVG when:

  • You need infinite scalability (logos, icons)
  • The destination is web-based
  • You want to edit further in vector tools
  • Quality must be maximum

Convert AI to PNG when:

  • You need a high-quality raster image with transparency
  • The destination is web/social media
  • You don’t need vector editability

Convert AI to JPG when:

  • File size matters
  • No transparency needed
  • The destination is mainly photographic contexts

Convert AI to PDF when:

  • You need print-ready output
  • The destination needs vector preservation but PDF compatibility
  • Recipients don’t have Illustrator

For most casual uses: PNG output works well. For logos/icons: SVG.

Resolution decisions

AI files are vector — infinitely scalable. When converting to raster (PNG/JPG):

Choose output dimensions based on use:

  • Web/social: 1080-2400 pixels wide
  • Print: 300 DPI at final print size (e.g., business card = 1050×600 at 300 DPI)
  • High-res master: 4000+ pixels wide; downsize from there

The original AI file’s quality isn’t lost; you’re just choosing how big to render.

Preserving layers / editability

To keep editing: stick with vector formats (AI, SVG, PDF). Layer information preserved.

For final use: PNG/JPG flatten everything. Once exported, can’t recover the original layers.

Best practice: keep the AI as your master, export to PNG/JPG/SVG for delivery.

What gets preserved

To SVG:

  • Vectors: yes
  • Text as text (editable): yes (with caveats about font availability)
  • Effects: mostly (some Adobe-specific effects don’t translate)
  • Layers: yes

To PNG/JPG:

  • Final visual appearance: yes
  • Everything else: rasterized

To PDF:

  • Vectors: yes
  • Layers: depends on options
  • Editability: PDF can be edited in Acrobat Pro, Illustrator, Inkscape

Common scenarios

Designer sent you a logo as AI; you need PNG for a website: open in Photopea → Export As → PNG.

Convert logo to SVG for web: critical for modern websites; Photopea → Export As → SVG.

Print AI file as PDF for a printer: Photopea or open in any PDF viewer.

Edit a stock AI illustration: Photopea or Inkscape for free; Affinity Designer or Illustrator paid.

Bulk convert many AI files: Adobe Bridge (batch process) or command-line tools.

Command-line conversion

For batch processing:

ImageMagick (free):

convert input.ai output.png

Works for many AI files but advanced effects may not render correctly.

Inkscape command-line:

inkscape input.ai --export-type=png --export-filename=output.png

Better fidelity for complex files.

When conversion goes wrong

Some AI files don’t convert cleanly:

Missing fonts: text appears in fallback font. Have the original fonts installed for best results.

Advanced effects don’t render: Adobe-specific blend modes, 3D effects may differ.

Linked images missing: AI files can reference external image files; those need to be available.

Color profile issues: CMYK AI files converting to RGB outputs may have color shifts.

For mission-critical work: convert in actual Illustrator if possible.

File size after conversion

  • AI source: 1-50 MB typical
  • SVG output: similar size or smaller (text-based)
  • PNG output: 0.5-10 MB depending on resolution
  • JPG output: 100 KB - 2 MB
  • PDF output: 0.5-5 MB

For sharing: PNG at moderate resolution covers most needs.

After converting

Privacy

Photopea: runs in your browser; nothing uploads.

Inkscape, Affinity, Illustrator: local desktop apps; no upload.

Online converters: upload required. Privacy concern for confidential designs.

For sensitive brand assets: use Photopea (browser-based but client-side) or local apps.

TL;DR

  • Without Illustrator: use Photopea (free, browser-based)
  • Open as PDF: many AI files open in PDF readers since they have PDF compatibility
  • Free desktop: Inkscape (handles most AI files)
  • Paid alternative: Affinity Designer ($70 one-time)
  • Best output for web: SVG (scalable) or PNG (raster with transparency)
  • For print: PDF
  • For photographic content within designs: JPG
  • Keep the AI as master file; export to delivery formats as needed
  • After: Image Compressor, SVG to PNG workflows
