How to Convert PSD to PNG or JPG

psdphotoshoppngjpgconversion

.psd is Adobe Photoshop’s native format. It stores layers, effects, masks, and editing history in a format only Photoshop fully understands. To use a PSD as a regular image (share, post, embed), you need to convert it.

Without Photoshop installed

Photopea (free, browser-based): the best free option.

  1. Visit photopea.com
  2. File → Open → choose your .psd
  3. Photopea loads it with layers intact
  4. File → Export As → PNG (or JPG)
  5. Configure quality
  6. Save

Photopea handles 99% of PSD files cleanly — preserves layer structure, effects, masks, gradients.

With Photoshop

If you have Photoshop:

  1. Open the PSD
  2. File → Export → Export As
  3. Choose PNG or JPG
  4. Adjust quality/dimensions
  5. Save

Or File → Save a Copy → JPG/PNG for a simpler workflow.

Free desktop alternatives

GIMP (free, cross-platform): opens PSDs (with some limitations on complex effects).

Krita (free, art-focused): handles many PSDs.

Affinity Photo (paid one-time, $70): full PSD support, no subscription.

Batch conversion

For folders of PSDs to convert:

Adobe Bridge (free with any Adobe app): batch process settings.

ImageMagick (command-line, free):

mogrify -format png *.psd

Or for JPG:

mogrify -format jpg -quality 90 *.psd

Limitations: ImageMagick handles most PSDs but complex layer effects may render incorrectly.

What gets preserved

When converting PSD → PNG or JPG:

Preserved:

  • Final visual appearance
  • Color information
  • Transparency (PNG only; JPG fills with white)

Lost:

  • Layer structure (PSD’s defining feature)
  • Smart Objects
  • Editable text layers (becomes rasterized text)
  • Adjustment layers (baked into pixel data)
  • Layer masks (baked in)
  • Layer effects (baked in)

For preserving editability: keep the PSD as your master file. Export to PNG/JPG only for delivery.

Choosing PNG or JPG

Choose PNG when:

  • The image has transparency
  • The image has text (PNG keeps text crisp)
  • It’s a logo or icon
  • Quality matters more than file size
  • You’ll edit further

Choose JPG when:

  • The image is photographic
  • File size matters
  • You don’t need transparency

See PNG vs SVG and JPEG Quality for the full comparison.

Resolution / dimensions

PSDs can be high-resolution. When exporting:

For web display: 72-150 DPI is sufficient. Reduce dimensions if needed.

For print: 300 DPI at the final print size.

For social media: platform-specific dimensions (see Best Image Sizes for Social Media — coming soon).

For master archival: keep at original dimensions.

For specific dimensions, use Image Resizer after export.

Common scenarios

Designer delivered a PSD; you need a JPG for the web: open in Photopea, export.

You bought a PSD template (logo, mockup, etc.): customize in Photopea, export as PNG.

Convert old PSD archives: batch process with ImageMagick or Photoshop actions.

Sharing a layered design with someone without Photoshop: send as PSD if they have Photopea, or as flattened PNG.

Web/social use of a Photoshop-made design: export as PNG (or JPG for photos).

File size expectations

  • PSD: often 50-500 MB (preserves all editing data)
  • PNG output: 5-30 MB (still relatively large; lossless)
  • JPG output: 0.5-5 MB (compressed)

PSDs are big because they hold every layer + history. Exported flat images are much smaller.

Handling complex effects

Some PSD effects don’t translate perfectly:

Smart filters (non-destructive filters): rasterized on export.

Smart Objects: become regular pixel layers when flattened.

3D layers: rasterized.

Camera Raw filter: applied at export.

Generator-based effects: may render slightly differently in Photopea vs Photoshop.

For mission-critical work: export from Photoshop itself. For most uses: Photopea is fine.

Specific PSD content types

Logo designs: typically convert cleanly. Keep vector smart objects if you have them.

Photo edits: usually fine.

UI mockups: layered designs that may need adjustment after export.

Print-ready designs: prefer PDF export over PNG/JPG for print delivery. Photopea: File → Export As → PDF.

Mockups with smart objects: replace the smart object content in Photopea, then export.

After converting

Privacy

Photopea: runs in your browser; nothing uploads. Good for confidential design work.

Photoshop / GIMP / Affinity: local apps, no upload.

Online converters (Smallpdf, etc.): upload required. Privacy concern for sensitive content.

For confidential designs: stick to Photopea or local apps.

TL;DR

  • Without Photoshop: Photopea (free, browser-based)
  • With Photoshop: File → Export → Export As
  • Batch: ImageMagick command-line or Adobe Bridge
  • Choose PNG for: transparency, text, logos, lossless
  • Choose JPG for: photographic content, small files
  • Preserved in conversion: final visual; lost: layer structure
  • Keep the PSD as master file; export PNG/JPG for delivery only
  • After: Image Compressor, PNG to WebP
