How to Crop a PDF (Remove White Space or Unwanted Areas)

pdfcropedit

You have a PDF with too much white space, scanned pages where only part of each page matters, or a document with branded headers/footers you want to remove. Cropping reduces the visible area to just what you need.

On Mac (Preview)

Built-in:

  1. Open PDF in Preview
  2. Tools → Show Inspector (or Cmd+I)
  3. Or: Tools → Rectangular Selection
  4. Drag to select the area you want to KEEP
  5. Tools → Crop (or Cmd+K)
  6. Save (Cmd+S) — original is modified, or use Save As for a copy

Preview’s crop is simple and effective. The cropped area becomes the new page boundary.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

For more control:

  1. Open PDF in Acrobat Pro (paid)
  2. Tools → Edit PDF → Crop Pages
  3. Drag to select crop area
  4. Apply to: current page, range, or all pages
  5. Save

Acrobat’s crop supports per-page or all-pages application and can preserve original margins as “hidden” rather than removed (useful for reversibility).

Free desktop alternatives

Briss (free, Windows/Mac/Linux): specifically designed for PDF cropping. Open-source.

PDFsam Basic (free): includes a crop feature.

LibreOffice Draw (free): can open PDFs, crop, re-export.

Browser-based: image route workflow

We don’t have a dedicated PDF cropper, but the workflow with our tools handles it:

  1. PDF to Images: convert PDF pages to images at high DPI
  2. Image Cropper: crop each image
  3. JPG to PDF: combine cropped images back into PDF

More steps than a direct crop, but works for any PDF and is fully browser-based.

What cropping does

PDF cropping changes the visible page boundary without altering the underlying content:

  • Visual area is reduced
  • Content outside the crop is “hidden” (still in the file, just not displayed)
  • File size doesn’t necessarily shrink (content remains)
  • Original margins/edges become inaccessible to standard PDF viewers

For actually removing the data (not just hiding it), you’d need the image-route workflow above.

Common scenarios

Removing scanner edge artifacts: dark borders from scanning. Crop them out for clean output.

Removing page numbers / headers / footers: company logos, page numbers, dates in the margins.

Focusing on a specific column/section: multi-column PDFs where you only need one column.

Removing watermarks (when legitimate to do so): cropping out areas where watermarks appear.

Standardizing page sizes: mixed-source PDFs with different page dimensions can be cropped to consistent dimensions.

Excerpt extraction: cropping pages to focus on charts, quotes, or specific content.

Crop vs other operations

Crop: changes page boundaries; content is hidden.

Redact: removes specific content permanently (see Redact Text in PDF).

Extract pages: keeps whole pages, removes others (see Extract Specific Page from PDF).

Split: divides into multiple files (see PDF Splitter).

Choose based on what you actually need to do.

Reversibility

In most PDF tools, cropping is reversible:

  • The content remains in the file
  • “Restoring” the original page boundaries usually works

For permanent removal of cropped content:

  • “Flatten” the PDF in Acrobat (makes crop permanent)
  • Or use the image-route workflow (cropped content is truly gone)

Crop dimensions and aspect ratio

Common cropping decisions:

Maintain aspect ratio: keep proportional. Useful when the cropped output will replace the original.

Free crop: any aspect ratio. Useful when you only care about specific content.

Standardize to letter/A4: crop different-sized pages to consistent dimensions.

Square crop: for image-heavy documents being shared on social media.

Most tools allow visual cropping with optional constraints.

File size

Cropping doesn’t always reduce file size significantly because:

  • Content outside the visible area is still stored (just hidden)
  • The image data for each page remains in full

For real size reduction after cropping:

  • Use PDF Compressor after cropping
  • Or use the image-route workflow that genuinely removes data

Multi-page consistency

When cropping a multi-page PDF:

Apply to all pages: most tools offer “apply to all” — uses the same crop region across the document.

Per-page cropping: useful when pages have different layouts or where some pages need different treatment.

Section-based cropping: crop pages 1-10 one way, pages 11-20 another way (rare; requires careful selection).

For consistent documents, all-pages cropping is standard.

After cropping

Privacy

Mac Preview, Acrobat Pro: run locally. No upload.

Online cropping services (Smallpdf, etc.): upload required. Privacy concern for sensitive content.

For sensitive PDFs: use Mac Preview or our image-route workflow.

TL;DR

  • Mac: Preview → Tools → Rectangular Selection → Crop
  • Windows / cross-platform free: Briss
  • Acrobat Pro: Tools → Edit PDF → Crop Pages (paid)
  • Browser-based workflow: PDF to Images → Image Cropper → JPG to PDF
  • Crop hides content; for permanent removal use image-route workflow
  • For real size reduction: combine with PDF Compressor after
