How to Record Audio on Your Computer (Mac or Windows)

Computers have great built-in tools for recording audio. No need to buy software for basic recording needs. Here’s how to capture your voice, system audio, or both — on Mac and Windows.

On Mac: QuickTime Player

The fastest path on Mac:

  1. Open QuickTime Player
  2. File → New Audio Recording
  3. Click the arrow next to record to choose input device and quality
  4. Click the red record button
  5. Click stop when done
  6. File → Save as M4A

Output: M4A file (Apple’s audio format). Convert to MP3 with MP4 to MP3 if needed.

On Mac: Voice Memos

For quick voice recording:

  1. Open Voice Memos app
  2. Click the red record button
  3. Click stop
  4. Voice memos sync to iPhone via iCloud

Output: M4A. Good for quick notes; less control than QuickTime for serious recording.

On Mac: GarageBand (free, capable)

For multi-track recording with effects:

  1. Open GarageBand
  2. New empty project
  3. Add audio track
  4. Click record
  5. Edit, mix, add effects
  6. Export → M4A or MP3

GarageBand is overkill for simple recording but excellent for podcasts or music.

On Windows: Voice Recorder

Built into Windows 10/11:

  1. Open Voice Recorder (or “Sound Recorder” in newer Windows)
  2. Click microphone icon to start
  3. Click again to stop
  4. Recording saves automatically

Output: M4A.

On Windows: Audacity (free, capable)

Audacity (free, cross-platform):

  1. Install Audacity
  2. Set input device
  3. Click record (red circle)
  4. Click stop
  5. File → Export As MP3 (or WAV, FLAC, etc.)

Audacity is the standard for serious audio editing. Multitrack, effects, noise reduction, all free.

Recording system audio (computer’s playback)

By default, microphone recording captures only the mic, not system sounds. To record what your computer is playing:

Mac: not natively supported. Workarounds:

  • BlackHole (free): virtual audio device that routes system audio to recording inputs
  • Loopback (paid, $99): popular commercial solution
  • OBS Studio (free): can record system audio in screen recordings

Windows:

  • Stereo Mix (built-in to many sound cards): right-click speaker → Sounds → Recording tab → enable Stereo Mix → set as default
  • OBS Studio (free): records system audio easily
  • Audacity with WASAPI loopback: select your speaker as input source

Recording mic + system audio (both)

For tutorials, gameplay commentary, podcast guests via Zoom:

OBS Studio (free, cross-platform): record screen with multiple audio sources.

Audacity with multiple tracks: more complex setup but doable.

ScreenFlow (Mac, paid): excellent for tutorial creators.

Camtasia (paid, cross-platform): industry-standard tutorial recording.

Microphone choices

What you record with matters:

Built-in laptop mic: usable for quick notes. Poor for anything you’ll share publicly.

USB headset mic: dramatic improvement. ~$30-100.

USB condenser mic (Blue Yeti, Audio-Technica AT2020USB): popular podcast/streaming mics. ~$100-200.

Professional XLR mic + audio interface: best quality. ~$300+.

For most users: a USB headset or USB condenser mic is the right step up from built-in.

Recording settings

Sample rate: 44.1 kHz (CD quality) or 48 kHz (video standard). 48 kHz is fine.

Bit depth: 16-bit (CD quality) or 24-bit (higher dynamic range). 16-bit is plenty for voice.

Format: WAV (lossless, large) for editing master; MP3 (compressed) for distribution.

For voice/podcast work: 48 kHz, 24-bit recording, export to MP3 at 192-256 kbps.

Environment

Recording quality depends on environment as much as gear:

  • Quiet room: close doors, turn off HVAC
  • Soft surroundings: carpet, curtains, soft furnishings absorb echoes
  • Close to mic: 4-12 inches typical for voice
  • Pop filter: prevents “p” and “b” pops on mic
  • Wind protection: if outdoors, use windscreen

A decent mic in a treated room beats a great mic in a bad room.

File size expectations

For typical voice recording:

  • WAV (16-bit, 48 kHz, mono): ~5.5 MB per minute
  • MP3 (192 kbps): ~1.5 MB per minute
  • MP3 (128 kbps): ~1 MB per minute

For an hour of recording: 330 MB WAV, 90 MB MP3 at 192 kbps.

Common use cases

Voice memos: built-in Voice Recorder / Voice Memos are sufficient.

Podcasts: Audacity or GarageBand for quality.

Phone interviews: record via Zoom/Riverside.fm or use computer mic with the phone on speaker.

Music creation: GarageBand on Mac, FL Studio / Ableton on Windows.

Voice over for video: any tool works; sync audio with video in your editor.

Lectures and meetings: phone or laptop voice recorder is fine.
