What is 4K Resolution?

You’ve seen “4K” everywhere — TVs, phones, streaming services. It refers to a specific video resolution that’s now standard for high-end content. Here’s what the term means and when it actually matters.

The specific number

4K typically means 3840 × 2160 pixels in consumer contexts. That’s:

  • 4× the pixels of 1080p (Full HD)
  • 8 million pixels per frame
  • “Roughly 4000 pixels wide” — hence the “4K”

There’s also a slightly different version, DCI 4K (4096 × 2160), used in cinema. The consumer/TV version (3840 × 2160) is also called UHD (Ultra HD).

For most purposes, “4K” means 3840 × 2160.

Each step up is roughly 2× the pixels of the previous.

When 4K matters

Large displays: on a 65” TV viewed from typical distance (8-10 feet), 4K shows visibly more detail than 1080p.

Close viewing: a 27” monitor on a desk — 4K shows sharper text and more visual real estate.

Content with fine detail: nature scenes, sports, architecture, anything with textures.

Future-proofing: 4K content will play correctly for years on high-res screens.

When 4K doesn’t matter

Small screens: on a phone (6-7” display), 4K is barely distinguishable from 1080p at normal viewing distance.

Casual content: family videos, vacation clips — the people watching them aren’t analyzing pixel detail.

Streaming with limited bandwidth: 4K requires ~25 Mbps; you need fast internet for smooth playback.

Storage-constrained situations: 4K videos are 4× the file size of 1080p.

File size implications

For a typical 5-minute video:

  • 1080p, H.264: ~150 MB
  • 1080p, H.265: ~75 MB
  • 4K, H.264: ~600 MB
  • 4K, H.265: ~300 MB

4K videos are large. For uploading, emailing, archiving on limited storage, this matters.

Bandwidth for streaming

To stream smoothly:

  • 480p: 1-3 Mbps
  • 720p: 3-5 Mbps
  • 1080p: 5-8 Mbps
  • 4K SDR: 15-25 Mbps
  • 4K HDR: 25-35 Mbps

If your internet is slow, 4K won’t stream well even when available.

When you can’t actually see 4K detail

Viewing distance matters:

For 4K resolution to be visible to the human eye:

  • 65” TV: view from 8 feet or closer
  • 55” TV: view from 7 feet or closer
  • 27” monitor: view from 2-3 feet
  • 13” laptop: view from 18” or closer

If you’re sitting further than these distances: 1080p looks the same as 4K. The extra pixels are too small to resolve.

Phone 4K cameras

Modern iPhones and Android phones can shoot 4K. The benefits:

  • Future editing flexibility: more pixels to crop/zoom into
  • Better stabilization: software stabilization needs extra pixels to work with
  • Higher quality when downscaled to 1080p

The costs:

  • 4× the storage of 1080p
  • More heat during long recording
  • Some apps don’t accept 4K uploads

For casual filming: 1080p is fine. For potential future re-editing: 4K helps.

4K vs HDR

Different things:

  • 4K is about pixel count (resolution)
  • HDR is about color and brightness range (dynamic range)

You can have:

  • 4K + SDR (high resolution, standard color)
  • 1080p + HDR (lower resolution, wider color)
  • 4K + HDR (both — premium content)

For TV viewing, HDR often makes more visual difference than 4K. The wider color and contrast range is noticeable even at lower resolutions.

Should you upgrade to 4K?

Yes, if:

  • TV is 55” or larger
  • You sit close to the screen
  • You watch content with fine detail (nature, sports)
  • You have fast internet (25+ Mbps)
  • Cost is acceptable

No, if:

  • TV is smaller than 50”
  • You sit far from the screen
  • Most of your content is older (DVD, older streaming)
  • Internet is slow
  • 1080p TV is recent and works fine

The honest answer: most viewers wouldn’t notice 4K vs 1080p in blind tests at typical viewing distances. The marketing benefit exceeds the visual benefit in many cases.

Working with 4K video

Storage: a single 1-hour 4K video is ~25 GB. Plan accordingly.

Editing: 4K editing is computationally heavy. A capable computer (M-series Mac, 16+ GB RAM, decent GPU) is needed for smooth editing.

Sharing: 4K is great for YouTube; emails and casual sharing usually require downscaling.
